Lying on the south bank of the Elbe River
is the Altes Land, home to fruit orchards, traditional German homes ,and
beautiful gardens. Hearing how lovely the Altes is during cherry
blossom time, we trekked down for some exploring. True to 'stupid
American' selves, we've now been there three times (4/28/04) and seem to
have missed most of the blossoms. Either we're expecting something
quite different, or we've been heading in the wrong direction...
In any case, the town of Jork (York) and the surrounding community are
quite delightful, blossom-time or not, and we have enjoyed ourselves
each time. |
View of a traditional German farmhouse Each farmhouse seems to be slightly different. The area is criss-crossed with canals, presumably to water the orchards. Detail of the amazing brickwork. The elusive cherry orchard.
