Described in one of our guidebooks as 'the hub of tourism in the Western Harz', I had planned to spend as much time outside of Goslar as possible.  Apart from our hotel, anyway.  As it turns out, Goslar is a charming (yes, touristy) medieval town that  is lots of fun to walk through, and our hotel was not in Goslar after all.  So much for my plans (and my weather forecast!!).  Also according to our guidebook, Goslar was founded by Heinrich I in 922.  The town, its Kaiserpfaltz (seat of the Saxon kings), and the nearby Rammelsberg mines are listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites.  The town has a fairy-tale air to it, and its many half-timbered houses just add to the charm.
.

Look what we found while wandering around looking for our hotel.
