One of the reasons for visiting the Harz Mountains was the castle in
Wernigerode, which made our 'Lonely Planet' guide's must-see list. The
castle sits high above the town, as is visible for miles. We took the
tram up to the grounds, and wandered around. The cobblestone road
winds its way around the castle, passing a number of shops, restaurants, and
a small hotel before reaching the courtyard, where you can see for miles.
Other paths take your below the courtyard through a tunnel. Russell
decided he was having enough fun just looking around outside (and we still
had Thale to visit), so we didn't tour the interior.
