Schleswig is the oldest town in northern Europe, dating back to 804.  It owes much of its history to its location on the Schlei Fjord, the largest of the Baltic fjords, reaching 40 km (24 miles) inland.

Russell realized that schlosses (palaces) resemble large houses more than castles, and having already spent Saturday in a schloss, decided he would rather wander through the sculpture garden than the palace itself.  We therefore decided to continue on our journey, completely unaware that this schloss housed an amazing museum.  (I expect we'll be back the next rainy weekend...) We wandered through the town, eventually reaching the cathedral (the Dom St. Petri) and the harbor.  The Dom is simply amazing - our guidebooks recommended it for the altar pieces and artwork, but completely skipped the magnificent stained glass.  I've tried to capture some of the windows, but nothing can compare to being surrounded by the jeweled colors.
