We had also visited Bruges on our last
trip to Belgium, when we discovered the wonders of traveling by train.
So, especially after talking with the de Shryvers, it seemed natural to
take the train again - the trains are inexpensive (and fun!), whereas
parking spaces in Bruges are few and expensive. Bruges itself is a
walking - or boating - city, encircled by garden-lined canals. The
cobbled streets are narrow, and full of tourists spilling off the
sidewalks, so in all we were much happier leaving the car behind.
Bruges is a major tourist destination, but not even the souvenir shops
detract from the overall charm of the town. Cathedral spires
dominate the skyline, and museums abound. And, then, of course,
there are the canals and bridges. Although we never quite found
'my spot', we had a lot of fun wandering around the canals, watching the
birds swimming along and looking at all the gardens. While eating
chocolate, of course! |
