The one thing Russell wanted to do
while in Germany was to 'see castles'. I mistook this for
'explore castles', so I included wandering through Burg Rheinfels as
part our itinerary (but I don't think Russ minded much). Rheinfels
is in ruins, but even so, it is gigantic. According to our
lonely planet guidebook, this castle, once the 'mightiest
fortress on the Rhine', was built in 1245 for Count Dieter V of
Katzenburg. Katzenburg is also responsible for Burg Katz just
across the river. Rheinfels withstood attack for over 500
years, until it was destroyed in 1797 in the French Revolution.
Downriver towards the town of St. Goarshausen, overlooked by Burg Maus. Neighboring Burg Katz, also built by Dieter V Katzenburg. Rheinfels, with Burg Maus in the background.
