Friday Night
Rhine in Bloom
Burg Rheinfels
Schloss Stolzenfels

Saturday morning we were blessed with beautiful weather, contrary to all weather forecasts earlier in the week.  Although there was quite a bit of early morning haze, we had plenty enough sunshine to keep us happy.  Our map of the Rhine lists 25 different castles and ruins stretching between Mainz and Koblenz.  Surprisingly, only two of these - The Pfalzgrafenstein, located literally in the Rhine, and Marksburg, above Braubach, stand intact, having never been destroyed.  Most of the other castles were laid waste in the late 18th century by the French Revolution.  During the German Romantic period of the 19th century, many of the castles were rebuilt, and are now museums, hotels, or private homes.

We headed north along the Rhine River, towards Koblenz,  in order to take pictures of the castles and ruins on the west bank.  After lunch ( a deep-fried hamburger!), we ferried across the Rhine to the town of Boppard and headed south to explore...

.

On the road again towards Rudesheim
