Egeskov Slot seems to be the crown jewel
of Fyn and is even listed in the "1000 Places to See Before You Die"
book we carry around. We arrived twenty minutes before the
'museums' closed, but we were more interested in the gardens anyway.
I think Russ has had enough of 'big house' tours. Egeskov is privately
owned, but the grounds have been open to the public for years. The
estate covers some 40 acres and includes a number of gardens, mazes, a
'tree-top' walk, a variety of museums, a deer park, streams, and a small
lake. It is apparent that the current owners have carefully
planned something for everyone, no matter what age, and it would be very
easy to spend one or even two days looking through everything. I
didn't look closely at the garden map while we were there, which was
probably a good idea - we may have never left.
Egeskov is celebrating its 450th anniversary this year. It has been owned by the same family since 1784. A topiary squirrel in the Renaissance Garden! The view from the English Garden. This stream becomes the formidable moat upon reaching the castle. The Museum of Agriculture. We just thought it was a pretty building. Did I mention there were gardens here, too? Carpets of glorious tulips!
